Poster prize winner
Many congratulations to Jovana Katrinka Mavrak (CiC 2022 cohort) who won first prize for her poster in her category at the Echocontrast conference (European Symposium on Ultrasound Contrast Imaging) in Rotterdam in January 2024.
International student competition
Ludwig Bauer (CiC Cohort 2020) participated in the global synthetic biology competition iGEM 2023, where he served as one of the judges. In his role, he evaluated student teams based on their project achievements and participated in the voting at the Grant Jamboree held in Paris (France) from 2nd to 5th November.
Poster prize winner
Ludwig Bauer (CiC Cohort 2020) presented a poster on his DPhil project involving chemoproteomic methods to profile global drug selectivity at the RSC Chemical Biology and Bio-Organic group Postgraduate Symposium in April 2023. Many congratulations for winning one of the poster prizes!
DPAG second year poster day
Many congratulations to Ríona Devereux (CiC Cohort 2020) who is a runner up in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy & Genetics' Second Year Student Poster Day 2022 'A Year of Progress'. The graduate studies committee said that the standard of all the posters was very high making it a very close competition.
Golden Master Award prize winner
Many congratulations to Raman Van Wee (CiC Cohort 2022) who has come second in The Golden Master Award, presented by the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society for research done by master students at a university in the Netherlands in chemistry and biomolecular sciences. In his thesis, Raman presented a novel method to identify single proteins by their characteristic fingerprint by integrating DNA nanotechnology and single-molecule FRET (Förster Resonance Energy Transfer). The jury mentioned high level of the performed work, the quality of the thesis, and the diversity of protein modifications, DNA tagging and spectroscopy as reasons to award the Second Prize of the Golden Master Award. The prize was presented during the Society’s annual meeting in Leiden on October 13.

A winner of the Jamie Ferguson Chemistry Innovation Award - Amber Truepenny, CiC Student Cohort 2020
"I had such a great time competing in the finals of the Jamie Ferguson Innovation award on Thursday. It was a challenge to condense my research into a 2-minute pitch on ‘A novel method of protein stabilisation for diseases of unmet need’, but it was invaluable to have questions and feedback from the panel of staff from Oxford University Innovation (OUI) as well as Oxford Chemistry Professors across a range of research areas. I also look forward to receiving ongoing mentoring from the OUI team as one of the winners. Thank you to my supervisors Professor Paul Brennan and Professor Benedikt Kessler for the support in developing this idea."
Publication - increasing diversity in graduate admissions
Our guest editorial in J. Med. Chem. on 'Increasing Diversity in Admissions to Postgraduate Study' is online. It describes the approaches that we have taken in the Chemistry in Cells PhD programme funded by Wellcome Trust.
Public engagement - developing podcasts
Using podcast skills learned from taking the CiC Life Skills Module, students from the MPLS DTC including Chemistry in Cells PhD programme produced a series of podcasts on Covid-19.
Interview with Angela Russell
Read about Chemistry in Cells Director Angela Russell, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in Oxford University's Department of Pharmacology and Chemistry, and her impressive career starting as an undergraduate in 1996, and her research at the interface of chemistry, biology and medicine.
